Hull classes, sizes and slots

A hull class is the size band of a hull, light, medium or heavy craft, and it sets the reactor, the heat capacity, the reactor armor slot and the Safeguards rules for the hull.

Values

10 numbers: 10 E

Each value is read from the game code. Sort by any column heading, or filter by grade or by a word.

The classes are the game's own. The shelf pages hold no size bands for craft.
Most hull points of a light craft, for a hull nobody authored120 hull pointsEAuthoredDesign notes: hullclass, The ruleThe old threshold the table was generated from, kept as the fallback for a hand-built stub or a new model.
Most hull points of a medium craft, for a hull nobody authored250 hull pointsEAuthoredDesign notes: hullclass, The ruleThe old threshold the table was generated from, kept as the fallback for a hand-built stub or a new model.
Sleek hull slopes by faceFORE 30, PORT 10, STARBOARD 10, UPPER 10, LOWER 10, AFT 10 degreesEAuthoredAtomic Rockets, spacewardefense, Section 10: General Armor Tactics, sloped armorChosen: a sleek hull is wedged with the steepest slope at the bow. The mirror advises long, thin nosecones for warships and gives no angle for each face. The sources are silent on this figure.
Square hull slopes by faceFORE 0, PORT 0, STARBOARD 0, UPPER 0, LOWER 0, AFT 0 degreesEAuthoredAtomic Rockets, spacewardefense, Section 10: General Armor Tactics, sloped armorZero slope on every face: a flat-faced hull. A sloped plate reads thicker by the secant of its angle (mirror, General Armor Tactics), and a slope of zero adds nothing.
Reactor armor slot size by size classLIGHT CRAFT light, MEDIUM CRAFT standard, HEAVY CRAFT heavy slot size by classEAuthoredNo source recordedEvery hull carries one reactor armor slot, sized by its class. The plate ratings (35, 80 and 115) are authored.
Hull roles that are built with reactor armor fittedCARRIER, COMBAT, CRUISER, DESTROYER, DRONE CARRIER, FLEET CARRIER, TROOP TRANSPORT hull rolesEAuthoredNo source recordedA navy or pirate warship comes with the plate. A yard hull comes bare, as its guns do.
Service years behind a hull before the captain200 yearsEAuthoredDesign notes: setting-canon, Timeline, 2076 to 2276No captain buys a new hull, because a shipbuilding plant's output goes to whoever needs tonnage that does not yet exist. The span is the two centuries of shipbuilding iteration that canon gives a hull.
The year the game begins2,500 yearEAuthoredDesign notes: setting-canon, Timeline, 2276 to 2500Canon: the game begins on 1 January 2500, after 224 years in which the plants built the same drawing.
Cargo the locker holds5 tonnesEAuthoredNo source recordedThe locker is a room ashore with a bed, a shelf and a kitchenette, and not a hull. Chosen so that a captain who sells up keeps an object that holds some cargo and cannot travel.

Real-world basis

5 points
  • A hull's points say how much shooting it survives, and its class says what it is.
  • The class sets reactor output, capacitor size, heat capacity, thermal signature, to-hit and the Safeguards license.
  • Class is authored per model, because a save stores the model.
  • Every hull carries one reactor armor slot, sized by its class.
  • A sloped plate reads thicker by the secant of its angle, so a hull sloped on a face stops more there.

Game and reality differences

2 points
  • The thresholds of 120 and 250 hull points are the fallback only, for a hull nobody authored.
  • The locker is a Ship object with no fuel capacity, so every body reads out of range.

Source absences

3 points
  1. No source on the shelf or Atomic Rockets page provides values for the following:
    1. Size bands for craft. The three classes and every threshold are authored.
    2. Most hull points of a light craft. 120 is authored.
    3. Most hull points of a medium craft. 250 is authored.
